This is the beginning. Cory and I are building a tiny house. This idea started long ago for both of us. Then we married each other and thought ‘well, we might as well do this thing’, and here we are. Let’s start by answering the basic questions. Yes, we have been planning our home long before the Portlandia skit made its debut. Yes, we will be living in roughly 280 square feet. Yes, we will have normal home things like an oven, normal size fridge, washer and dryer, running water and standard furniture. Yes, we have a good amount of things we would like to rid ourselves of before downsizing. No, we are not getting rid of everything, not even close. Yes, we will have a compositing toilet (may regret entering this point in so early on-more on that later). Yes, we will build our home so we can either live off the grid (solar and water tanks) or hooked up. Yes, we are really excited to begin building. Here are a few highlights on living small.
- Our home will be under 300 square feet, we won’t be spending money on buying things… because they won’t fit.
- Our entire home will cost roughly $18,000. No mortgage.
- Minimal maintenance, frees up money and time to go do things we would rather do. Like ride bikes, road trip, spend more time doing the things we enjoy with family and friends.
- Until we know where we want to settle down (purchase property) we can bring our home with us wherever we rent land.
Raising children in 300 square feet sounds less than ideal, so now is the time. I figured it would be good to have a few posts of the ‘before’, like before we even purchase the trailer. Because there is already so much time with design and research that has gone into this project. This shot is a visual of our current tiny house work. Sitting at our kitchen table designing and then re-designing our house plans in this graph paper spiral. Researching, a lot of blog reading and now.. blog posting on what we are learning. I will try and keep this blog updated regularly- it will be slower at the beginning until we start the construction, scheduled to begin early June. Not sure how to sign off… I’ll figure something out for the next post. Hannah
